What Is Phosphorus?
Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the human body, after calcium. About 85% is stored in bones and teeth as calcium phosphate — the crystalline compound that gives skeletal tissue its hardness and strength. The remaining 15% is distributed throughout soft tissues and blood, where it participates in hundreds of biochemical processes essential to life.
Despite being widely available in food, phosphorus deficiency (hypophosphatemia) can occur in individuals with malabsorption conditions, eating disorders, alcoholism, or those taking certain medications like antacids that bind phosphate.
Key Functions of Phosphorus

Dietary Sources of Phosphorus
Phosphorus is found in virtually all protein-containing foods:
- Animal proteins: chicken, turkey, beef, pork, fish, eggs
- Dairy: milk, yogurt, cheese
- Seeds: pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds
- Legumes: lentils, chickpeas, black beans
- Whole grains: quinoa, oats, brown rice
- Nuts: almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts
Note: Phosphorus from plant sources (phytate-bound) is less bioavailable than from animal sources. Soaking, sprouting, or fermenting legumes and grains improves absorption.
Phosphorus and Calcium Balance
Calcium and phosphorus exist in a delicate ratio in the body. An ideal dietary calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is approximately 1:1 to 2:1. Modern diets — high in processed foods and soft drinks (which contain phosphoric acid) — often skew this ratio toward excess phosphorus, which can impair calcium absorption and accelerate bone loss over time.
Maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D intake helps counterbalance high phosphorus loads from the diet.
Dosage and RDA
- Adults 19+: 700 mg/day
- Adolescents 9–18: 1,250 mg/day (peak bone-building years)
- Pregnant/lactating women: 700 mg/day
Most adults consuming adequate protein easily meet phosphorus needs through diet alone. Supplementation is rarely needed unless a specific deficiency is confirmed.
